The Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium (APICC) and the University of Alaska have reached an agreement to collaborate with the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development and the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development to plan, develop and support access to engineering academies for public high school students in Alaska. This initiative will help build a pipeline of highly qualified Alaskans to enter careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or STEM, fields.

Today, Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 4:30 p.m., partners signed an Engineering Academies MOU to establish the basis for collaborative work in planning, developing a funding proposal and establishing a coordinated implementation system for sustaining the initiative. The signing ceremony was held at the University of Alaska Anchorage Consortium Library.

Signing as partners are:

  •  Todd Bergman, Executive Director of APICC
  •  Fran Ulmer, Chancellor, University of Alaska Anchorage
  •  Brian Rogers, Chancellor, University of Alaska Fairbanks
  •  John Pugh, Chancellor, University of Alaska Southeast
  •  Larry LeDoux, Commissioner, Alaska Department of Education and Early Development
  •  Click Bishop, Commissioner, Alaska Department of Education and Workforce Development

APICC to Launch Process and Energy Industry Mobile Briefcase

APICC featured on PBS - The National Education Report

The Alaska Process Industry hosted a film crew from the Hugh Downs production: The National Education Report in February. APICC will be featured on the National Education Report to be aired on PBS stations in Alaska, nationally, and internationally starting in October.

This programming tells the story of APICC, its mission and initiatives delivering workforce development, career pathways, and a safety culture for the process and energy industries in Alaska.

“This program should help us reach all corners of our state delivering APICC’s mission of career opportunity,”said Todd Bergman, APICC Executive Director. Look for this program to run in your area on a PBS affiliate beginning in October and November 2009.

TIE (Teacher Industry Externships) go digital

In 2009, APICC placed ten externs in industry.  We are receiving some very positive updates and will have externs sharing experiences at some of our events and meetings.  Our 2010 TIE Grant is helping us to expand this succesful program with a target of 25 externs.  The efforts this year will include an early start, expanded outreach efforts to educators and industry, a new film promoting the program, renewed resource materials, and statewide distribution of TIE information and film materials.  If you know an industry that may be interested in becoming a teacher host, please contact Moriah Miles at 907-743-6803 or email her at mmiles@apicc.org
