The APICC Nominations and Elections Committee is seeking nominations for the APICC Board of Directors. The nominations period is open now through 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

Who is eligible?

Individuals who are members of APICC in good standing or who are employed by member organizations in good standing, who by their past actions and accomplishments have demonstrated not only a dedication to the purposes and goals of APICC, but also the ability to carry out and achieve those purposes and goals.

How long is the term?

Three years, beginning immediately after the APICC Annual Meeting and Conference on November 18, 2016.

How do I nominate a candidate for the APICC Board?

To nominate a candidate for Director, you must also be a member in good standing. Nominations need to be made in writing and sent to the APICC Nominations & Elections Committee no later than Wednesday, October 5, 2016.

The nomination needs to be accompanied by a written statement from the nominee of their willingness to serve.

Can I nominate myself?

Yes, self-nominations are accepted.

APICC Annual Meeting draws high energy crowd, engages industry & students

APICC Update

It was my pleasure to address APICC members, our education and training partners, students and community members at the APICC Annual Meeting on Friday. What a great opportunity for us to share our accomplishments, and say thank you to everyone that made our successes possible! (Click here if you’d like to see a full copy of the opening remarks). The day was filled with informative presentations addressing topics like cross-industry workforce development strategies, connections with economic development, health and safety training, and career opportunities for Alaskans through training.  Department of Labor Commissioner Heidi Drygas talked about current workforce issues and even fielded a few questions from students in the audience.  A lot of great connections were made during the high energy day. Thank you to all our attendees, presenters, and volunteers. It was a great event!

Keynote Jeff Edmondson hits the mark

Alaska has a unique opportunity to be the first state to attempt statewide collective impact

Strive Network’s Jeff Edmondson really connected with the APICC audience during his keynote presentation. Jeff has worked with a number of collective impact efforts across the country, helping organizations within those communities organize to make a difference in the lives of children, from cradle to career. Jeff told attendees at the APICC meeting that Alaska could be the first State to attempt statewide collective impact effort.  The effort would need to look at ways to overcome Alaska’s unique physical landscape and population disbursement.  However, positive steps are already being made toward building the foundations for success. APICC Partners are Making A Difference

Denali Media Group and KTVA Channel 11

Rick Boots, Sales Director for Denali Media Group, shared his background working in industry on the North Slope. Now that he’s in media, Rick is helping to draw attention to workforce needs and opportunities for Alaskans through Workforce Wednesday.  This new segment on KTVA Channel 11’s Daybreak is a way to share information with parents and students about industry, where to get training, and scholarships available. Look for the segment every Wednesday morning on Daybreak.  Daybreak airs between 6:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. each day.

Governor’s Council on Disabilities and Special Education

Kristin Vandagriff gave a moving presentation on meaningful employment for Alaskans with disabilities and outlined the ways the Governor’s Council can assist businesses that would like to tap into this often overlooked labor pool.  Kristin’s passion for her work was apparent throughout the day, as she spent breaks networking and handing out materials at their exhibit booth. We appreciate Kristin’s efforts to connect industry with Alaskans with disabilities, and provide meaningful, sustaining employment. Rural Alaska Honor’s Institute (RAHI)

Denise Wartes, program manager of the Rural Alaska Honor’s Institute (RAHI), expanded on the accomplishments of this long-standing program affiliated with the University of Alaska – Fairbanks. RAHI provides an opportunity for rural and Alaska Native high school junior and senior students to immerse themselves in a college experience for six weeks.  The students earn 8-10 college credits in rigorous courses and develop skills necessary to succeed in college. EXCEL Alaska 

Carol Wilson shared the resounding success of the first year of operation of EXCEL Alaska (Excellence Communication Employability skills, Leadership). EXCEL Alaska provides transitional skills and career exploration opportunities to high school students and young adults residing in rural Alaska.  7th – 12th graders receive vocational and life-skill training for all students, regardless of grade point average.  For more about EXCEL Alaska or to find out how to support their programs, please visit the EXCEL website.


Soldier for Life

Pat Sheppard’s passion for the official Soldier for Life – Transition Assistance Program was evident in her presentation. SFL-TAP at JBER provides world-class transition assistance to soldiers, family members, veterans, retirees, and DA civilians to create a plan for their career and/or educational transition from military to civilian life. APICC on KTVA Channel 11 for Workforce Wednesdays – starts tomorrow!

APICC is excited to be working with our members, Denali Media Group and KTVA Channel 11, to bring you Workforce Wednesdays.

Workforce Wednesdays begins this week on KTVA Channel 11 morning news show Daybreak. Join us on Wednesday mornings as we look at new opportunities in the Alaskan industrial sector and showcase some of our talented workforce. We are excited to share APICC’s programs and our partners’ stories with the public.

APICC has enjoyed a long partnership with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and we continue to work with AKDOLWD to meet the workforce needs of industry statewide. Because of our long-standing relationship with the Department, I am extremely delighted to announce that DOL Commissioner Heidi Drygas will address our members and partners at the APICC Annual Meeting on October 23, 2015.

Commissioner Heidi Drygas, Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development

Commissioner Heidi Drygas was appointed to lead the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development by Governor Bill Walker on December 19, 2014. Prior to being named commissioner, Drygas spent nearly a decade as General Counsel to the Alaska District Council of Laborers.

Drygas is a lifelong Alaskan, who was born and raised in Fairbanks. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a Juris Doctor from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.

The Commissioner’s remarks will follow a presentation by a cross industry panel, representing the Oil and Gas, Mining, Maritime, Construction, and Health Care industries. The panelists will be joined by the McDowell Group to present an update on cross-industry efforts and strategies that can help to better prepare Alaska’s future workforce.  The meeting will be held at the Dena’ina Center.  The panel discussion will begin at approximately 8:45 a.m., after opening remarks by the APICC Board of Directors, and followed by Commissioner Drygas.

Board of Directors Meeting Q3 News and Updates


Last Friday, the APICC Board of Directors held their third quarter meeting.  Our directors successfully covered all business included in a packed and challenging agenda. Chair Mickey Battle kept the energy level high during the three-hour meeting, focusing everyone on sustaining the strong momentum behind a number of new and ongoing projects.


At the meeting, Directors voted on and approved the slate of candidates submitted by the Nominations and Elections Committee. Committee Chair Heather Spear (Calista Corporation) reported that three incumbent Directors – Mickey Battle, Shell; Mark Hylen, Beacon; and Jeff Laube, Kenai Peninsula College – were among the nominees, along with Patrick Rose of Northern Industrial Training. All four nominations were submitted properly by eligible members, and received prior to the deadline set in the APICC Bylaws. Congratulations to all our worthy nominees!

Members will cast their ballot to approve the slate of candidates at the Annual Membership Meeting on Friday, October 23, at the Dena’ina Center. Ballots will be handed out and collected at the meeting. Members who are unable to attend should request an official absentee ballot early.  Absentee ballots must be submitted to the Nominations Chair before the Annual Meeting is adjourned at approximately 1:30 p.m.




The North American Process Technology Alliance (NAPTA) announced their plans to provide PTEC Program Auditor Training soon.  The announcement was made at their Instructor Skills Conference this week in New Orleans, which was attended by APICC Director Jeff Laube.  NAPTA is encouraging industry trainers in states with NAPTA endorsed Process Technology Degree Programs, like Alaska, to sign up for the training.  There are currently not enough folks certified by NAPTA across North America to perform program audits, which are required every four years to maintain the endorsement.  APICC encourages our industry partners to consider selecting an experienced in-house trainer for the auditor training, and to participate with APICC in future audits of the Process Technology Degree Programs at UAF Community and Technical College, Kenai Peninsula College, and the KPC Anchorage Extension site. Alaska’s PTEC program audits will be performed again in 2018. The auditor training courses will be provided online through WebEx.  Available training dates will be announced soon.  Contact the APICC office for more information.


Since early spring of this year, APICC has been working with a subcommittee of the Business Education Compact (BEC), the State of Alaska Division of Business Partnerships, and the McDowell Group to develop an analysis of workforce development priorities and strategies across Alaska.  Though a small portion of a larger undertaking, the project is extensive, requiring input and data from a number of industry sector experts.  An outline of the work-to-date was provided to the APICC Board of Directors for review and comments. Panelists from the BEC subcommittee will introduce the project, their goals, the steps ahead, and how the report aligns with the other BEC projects currently in progress. A detailed reporting of the data and progress to date will be presented at the APICC Annual Meeting by representatives of the McDowell Group.

I am so excited for the 2015 APICC Annual Meeting coming on October 23. It is my honor to be hosting our members, partners, and guests at the annual meeting for the first time as Executive Director. It is my privilege to be working with APICC’s SUPERSTAR staff to make our annual event a huge success!

The energy level is high at the APICC office.  Everyone is contributing their time, creativity, and unique abilities to put together a meeting packed with information, captivating speakers, and plenty of networking opportunities (and some fun!).  The meeting will focus on collaboration across organizations, with our partners and other organizations statewide.  We will discuss ideas for the future, identifying how we can align ourselves for a greater impact on education and workforce development across Alaska.

This year we will hear from nationally known keynote speaker and President of the Strive Network, Jeff Edmondson.  The Strive Network is a national cradle-to-career initiative that brings together leaders in Pre-K-12 schools, higher education, business and industry, community organizations, government leaders, parents and other stakeholders who are committed to helping children succeed from birth through careers. (Look for signed copies of Jeff’s book, Striving Together, on tables).

We will also hear from the McDowell Group, AEDC President and CEO Bill Popp, NSTC Manager Jane Oakley, the APICC Board, and several of our partners.  One of my favorite parts of the meeting is the opportunity to talk with students. Once again, we will have students attending from King Career Center, UAA, UAF, Kenai Peninsula College, and other schools around the state.  It’s an absolute treat to have them attend, and we are grateful to our meeting sponsors that make it possible.
